I'll take the bit on "focus, focus, focus" to heart!

I have been in and around the VC industry for 20 years and agree -- there are still real quality firms out there but some seem to have forgotten what their job is. I work with their portfolio companies when there are "people issues" and it disturbs me to see the guys who aren't willing to pay attention or take action when there is a problem. Worse are the ones who won't attend themselves, but also won't let anyone else come in and help because they don't want to admit there is an issue they are not dealing with.

Really intersting for a junior VC like me! Thanks

I am still not seeing how VCs are going to play well in early stage. It just doesn't seem to pencil out. Doesn't there need to be another form of VC?

why am I hearing those tearful complaints from Sand Hill Road?

Another aspect to think about is that many startups now-a-days don't need huge amount of funding. I have seen some amazing concepts develop out of 50K funding. So, instead of leaving that market to Angels if VCs can rethink of their Business Model. This segment of market will provide them a low risk, high and quick return alternative.

Great post, Fred, thanks. I also think specialization as a positive factor, including specialization in a geography (I'm biased on this), technology, vertical, execution model, etc.
